Lore:Aurora
The aurora (also known as Kyne's lights)[1] is a phenomenon observed in the night sky above Skyrim that is characterized by vivid ribbons of multi-colored light.[2] It occurs when the skies are clear,[3] and can even be seen from parts of Cyrodiil.[4] Similar phenomena occur in certain realms of Oblivion,[5][6][7] and Aetherius.[8][9]
Culture[edit]
The aurora played a significant role in the culture of the Nedic followers of the Cult of the Stars, who in some texts gave it similar importance to the constellations. They modeled their weapons and armor after the constellations and after the aurora. Cuirasses, jerkins, jacks, and robes were linked to the aurora, "protecteth Nirn from roguish particles, ye ill from on high". The cult followers referred to the aurora as the "curtain of light that wrappeth the globe in its folds", and their armor was meant to emulate its nature, in their words: "like the Aurora thou shalt make thy cuirass, that it may wrap thee and ward thee particularly 'gainst weaponry."[10]
The aurora is occasionally linked to the Nordic goddess Kyne,[1][11] and the Daedric Prince Meridia.[12]
During the conflict between the Ayleid cities of Delodiil and Abagarlas in Cyrodiil, on the night when the King of Abagarlas led his armies across the valley to Delodiil, the skies were lit by a furious racing aurora caused by a small group of Delodiil infiltrators backed up by Meridia who aided them in the creation of the Prismatic Core. Hearing the laughter in the lights of the skies, the king called off the attack, but when he and his soldiers returned to Abagarlas, they found their city had been utterly destroyed by the scorching light.[12][13][14]
The Direnni were once known to possess devices that could project artificial aurora effects, which they used to decorate their halls on the Isle of Balfiera.[15]
